Vern died  when his ship sunk in the Typhoon Cobra, Philippine Sea , on Dec 18, 1944, he  is honored with a Combat Action Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the WWII Victory Medal.

 

Vern  is buried/mentioned at Manila American Cemetery and Memorial  Manila, Metro Manila, National Capital Region, Philippines.
