He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1939 and served in the Corps of Engineers during World War II. From 1940 to 1944, Carl was stationed at Yakutat Landing Field in Alaska, where he was a member of the 807th Engineer Aviation Battalion. A contingent of the 28th Engineer Battalion, commanded by Captain Benjamin B. Talley, along with the 807th Engineers, built Yakutat Landing Field in 1940-1941.
