Leo was KIA when the USS Houston was hit and Sunk by several torpedoes in the Battle for Sunda Strait on March 1, 1942, Fireman First Class Leo C. Abate is honored with a Combat Action Ribbon, Purple Heart, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the WWII Victory Medal.

 

Leo is buried/mentioned at Manila American Cemetery and Memorial  Manila, Metro Manila, National Capital Region, Philippines.
