John was KIA when the ship was attacked/Hit and Sunk by a Kamikaze of the Coast off Okinawa on June 16, 1945, Lieutenant Junior Grade John R. Abbot Jr. is honored with a Combat Action Ribbon,  Purple Heart, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the WWII Victory Medal.

 

John is buried/mentioned at Honolulu Memorial Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA.
