James died when the Sub got lost (cause unknown) on Feb. 1, 1944(Declared on Jan. 11, 1946) Dead, he is honored with a Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the WWII Victory Medal.

 

James is buried/mentioned at Manila American Cemetery and Memorial  Manila, Metro Manila, National Capital Region, Philippines.
