Russel was KIA when the USS Saratoga was under attack by Kamikaze and other Japanese planes who badly damaged her on Feb. 21, 1945, he is honored with a Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Expeditionary Medal, American Campaign Medal, Distinguished Unit Citation, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WW II Victory Medal.

 

Russell is buried/mentioned at Honolulu Memorial, Honolulu County, Hawaii U.S.A.
