Irving was KIA fought delaying actions against the advancing Japanese before finally being cornered on Corregidor and forced to capitulate on May 6, 1942, he is honored with a Purple Heart with Gold Star, Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal Marine Corps, Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, American Campaign Medal, Navy & Marine Presidential Unit Citation, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WW II Victory Medal.
