James was KIA when a bomb from the first Kamikaze hit and the second one crashed at the aft section on May 4, 1945, he is honored with a Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Expeditionary Medal, American Campaign Medal, Navy & Marine Presidential Unit Citation, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WW II Victory Medal.

The USS Luce was on Radar Picket in the Pacific near the Kerama Islands when she was attacked by 2 Kamikaze Planes, she shot one but he dropped his bomb causing a late response for the second one, who crashed on his aft section (rear) and it sank.

James is buried/mentioned at Honolulu Memorial, Honolulu County, Hawaii U.S.A.
