Ben Bernis Jr. was KIA by mortar fire, during the Beach Assault on Eniwetok, on Feb 19, 1944, and he is honored with the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Army Presidential Unit Citation, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WW II Victory Medal.

Ben is reburied at Saint Michaels Cemetery, Saint Martinville, St. Martin Parish, Louisiana.
