(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Major Irwin Wells Carter (MCSN: 0-7542), United States Marine Corps, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight, in actions against enemy Japanese forces in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II.

 

 

Who is Irwin Carter?

Captain Irwin W. Cater was a Marine fighter pilot serving with the Cactus Air Force. He arrived on Guadalcanal as a member of VMF-122 on 22 December 1942, and transferred to VMF-121 on 1 January 1943. On 4 January 1943, Carter was assigned to fly cover over friendly ships in the Solomon Islands.
