From 1940 to 1944, Carl was stationed at Yakutat Landing Field in Alaska, where he was a member of the 807th Engineer Aviation Battalion. A contingent of the 28th Engineer Battalion, commanded by Captain Benjamin B. Talley, along with the 807th Engineers, built Yakutat Landing Field in 1940-1941.
