Courtland was KIA when the USS Juneau was hit and sunk by a Torpedo from the Japanese Submarine I-26 during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal on Nov. 13, 1942, and he is honored with the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Army Presidential Unit Citation, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WW II Victory Medal.

 

 

Courtland  is buried at Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, Metro Manila,

National Capital Region, Philippines.
