Mack was KIA when headed to refuel the USS Lexington, the lookout detected the Japanese Submarine I-72wich made her sunk on 23 January 1942, he is honored with a Purple Heart, Good Combat Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Navy & Marine Presidential Unit Citation, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WW II Victory Medal.

Mack is buried/mentioned at Honolulu Memorial, Honolulu County, Hawaii U.S.A.
