Jewel was KIA when the USS Houston was attacked by numerous Japanese Planes and got hit at one of the Turrets in the Battle of Makassar Strait, on 1 March 1942, and he is honored with the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Army Presidential Unit Citation, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WW II Victory Medal.


Jewell is buried at Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, Metro Manila,

National Capital Region, Philippines.

He also has a Memorial Grave at IOOF Cemetery, Golden City, Barton County, Missouri, USA.
