John was KIA, leading a damage-control party on-board the USS Enterprise and tended the wounded during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands. on Oct. 26, 1942, he is honored with a  Purple Heart, Navy/Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Action Ribbon,  Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the WWII Victory Medal.

 

John is buried/mentioned at Manila American Cemetery and Memorial  Manila, Metro Manila, National Capital Region, Philippines.
